Salafists and actually many non-Sufist sunni muslims consider Takfir a part of the first pillar of Islaam.

The word “takfiri ideology” is, in my opinion, not the correct description for Usbat al Ansar, as “Takfiri” is usually used for people following Kharijite ideology like parts of Takfir wal Hijra.

“Takfiri” in its common usage does not just describe a person that does Takfir, rather it describes a person who excommunicates others without any legal basis. And I don’t think the usual salafists are lacking this basis, so they can’t be called Takfiris.

That piece, “Tahawulat Usbt al-Ansar” is illustrative of why studying the motives and alliances of militant groups in the Palestinian camps in Lebanon is such a daunting task. Nothing can be taken at face value. Not even remotely. That bit about Muhjn, who the hell knows. It’s just as likely that Syrian sources are leaking false stories about arresting Muhjn while Usbat denies dealing with the Syrians in an effort to downplay ties between Syrian intelligence and Usbat/Jund a-sham.

Regarding a-tahawul a-thalith that “transformation” surely has little to do with an ideological shift. Rather it reflects Usbat al-ansar recognizing a shift in realities on the ground and reacting accordingly. Even takfiri’s are capable of political pragmatism. Well, some of them at least.

And who’s this Abu al-Ghadiyah character? I’m assuming he’s not the same guy the U.S. took out in Syria a few months ago…
